The Early Bird

I HEADED BACK TO Thistledown Farmhouse with a spring in my step, thrilled to have made my first sale. As I let myself in, I could hear Miranda in the kitchen. ‘I think we need some proper transport for our deliveries,’ I called, as I made my way down the corridor. ‘Something discreet. I had an audience by the time I reached the florist’s – what if they try to follow me back here?’ As I entered the room, she made a half-hearted noise of assent. She was sitting at the table, something small and green laid out in front of her. ‘Is everything okay? What’s that?’ I asked.

‘Gerald.’ Miranda moved her hand away to give me a better view of a tiny bird. ‘Every morning for the past two years he has taken it upon himself to wake me up at the crack of dawn demanding breakfast – because he is too lazy to get his own,’ she added, looking pointedly at the forlorn creature. ‘But I’ve been so busy lately that he’s had to fend for himself, so he decided to help himself to the honey cake in the bread bin. The cat heard the racket, came to investigate and now his wing is broken. Lucky that’s all it was, you great buffoon.’ (That last comment was aimed at the bird, not me.)

Gerald slowly lifted his head, made a strangled sort of tweeting noise and then let his head fall back down for dramatic effect. His stunt appeared to have worked though, for Miranda now scooped him up onto a soft feather cushion and began to feed him crumbs of honey cake whilst stroking his feathers. The cat stared furiously through the kitchen window.

‘I’ll make us some lunch,’ I volunteered. Now was clearly not the time to talk business.
